Santiago, Dominican Republic — PROCIGAR,
The Association of the Dominican
Cigar Manufacturers, finalized its fourth
annual Procigar Festival that was held
from February 6th-11th, 2011.
Sponsored by world-renowned Procigar members such as General Cigar, Matasa, Tabacalera de García, La Aurora, Tabadom and Tabaquisa, the 2011 Procigar Festival welcomed over 250 guests from more than 21 countries. Attendees included suppliers, retailers, consumers and industry associates who gathered to celebrate the Procigar Festival and to honor the Dominican Republic – the Cigar Country – as the number one exporter of premium cigars in the world.
The festival kicked off on February 6th in Casa de Campo, La Romana, where Tabacalera de García welcomed cigar lovers to the country and guided them through their facilities. While in La Romana, guests had the option of participating in the fourth annual Procigar Golf Tournament at the legendary Teeth of the Dog golf course, visiting the Cuevas de las Maravillas, taking a catamaran ride to Catalina Island, or simply relaxing at Casa de Campo.
On Tuesday, February 8th, guests headed to Santiago, the “heart of Cigar Country,” for three days, where they were able to partake in guided tours of Matasa, La Aurora, General Cigar and Davidoff factories. Attendees were also able to choose from other exciting activities while in Santiago, including beer & rum factory tours, city tours, merengue lessons, a round of golf in Playa Dorada, among others.
A wonderful goodie bag has been given to all Festival guests with a retail price of US$400.00, including our special cigar box, a beautiful ashtray, cigar accessories, polo shirt, hats, drinks, coffee and even a chacabana.
A welcome dinner was held at the former residence of Fernando León, Guillermo León’s late father, on Wednesday, February 9th, filled with Dominican culture, cuisine and music. A dancing contest was made up again of festival participants, where Joe Phillips took the crown earning the prize of selecting 100 cigars from any of the Procigar members cigar factories.
The following evening, the guests had the unique experience of a white attire dining atop Santiago’s Monumento a los Héroes de la Restauración where David Kitchens once again won the blind cigar tasting. The ever popular after party was held at Tribeca Lounge and had on this occasion the DJ and dancers of the renowned cub Nikki Beach.
The closing ceremony took place at the Centro Español, a private club in Santiago, with a carnaval theme where guests enjoyed a delicious dinner and an exciting show. This event culminated in a raffle of special products with a retail value from US$1,000 to US$5,000 that was held among the participants of the silent donations benefiting the Voluntariado de Jesús con los Niños and the Hospicio San Vicente de Paúl, non-profit organizations dedicated to helping ill children and impoverished elders.
