Tabacalera Palma’s origins date back to the mid 19th century, when a Spanish citizen by the name of Jose Manuel Blanco Lozada, moves to the Dominican Republic and specializes in the trade of tropical fruits and tobacco. His son, Jose Arnaldo, took the initiative to grow tobacco commercially, developing himself in the growing and trading business.
Jose Arnaldo went on to have a son, Jose Arnaldo II, who married Irene Dominguez, a hardworking woman that became extremely active with him in the business. They both dedicated all their efforts to the trade of cocoa beans, fruits, deli meats, and of course, tobacco.
Jose Arnaldo Blanco II founded Tabacalera Palma back in 1925, becoming one of the first cigar manufacturers in the Dominican Republic. By 1960, ‘La Palma’ had grown to have around 200 full time rollers producing cigars for the local market.
Later on, one of Mr. Blanco and Irene’s eight children, Jose Arnaldo III, became part of the 4th generation involved in the family business. Jose Arnaldo, affectionately known as Jochy, is the current owner and CEO of Tabacalera Palma.
Since the early 80’s Jochy has endured hard work to improve the family industry, developing Tabacalera Palma from producing cigars exclusively for the local market, to exporting them worldwide. In the midst of 1995, “Jochy” moves the factory facilities to a free trade zone park he founded called ‘La Palma’, located in the northern part of the country: Tamboril, out skirting Santiago, the second highest populated city of the Dominican Republic.
Nowadays Tabacalera Palma is a vibrant enterprise with a positive impact to the community. Not only does the company contribute with the direct employment of more than 300 citizens, more than 70% of them being women, and indirectly employing more than 500, but by numerous factors such as its support to many existing charities like the Firemen Patronage, the Orphanage of Tamboril, several sports organizations, among others.
Jochy devotes unconditional support towards small independent growers in the communities where Tabacalera Palma operates, as well as portraying a partnership in the state of the art tobacco farm “Estancia Flor de Palma” with the world-renowned cigar maker Litto Gomez from La Flor Dominicana.
Some of the finest tobaccos in the world are produced here, from the flavorful fillers and the delightful binders, to the exquisite wrappers of the uttermost quality.
Ever since Mr. Blanco assumed the role of CEO in Tabacalera Palma, the company has developed numerous private labels for many of the leading cigar companies in the world. Additionally, it has improved tobacco growing, harvesting, curing and processing techniques, ideal factors that compliment the high rankings of the Aging Room brand, one of the highest ever for a debuting cigar line.
